a demo dictionary for independent art spaces

by Zeynep Okyay

Many non-profit organizations use terms like "alternative," "independent," and "artist-run spaces," based on the idea of independence. However, some of these organizations are funded by corporations, raising questions about true independence.

Pablo Helguera notes that art institutions attempt to appear more alternative to stand out. Alternative art spaces are valuable for supporting new ideas and expressions.

During crises, cultural budgets are often the first to be cut, jeopardising art's independence when organisations rely on private funding. Independent arts groups without corporate ties can adapt better.

My project, “Indictionary,” aims to highlight the importance of independent organizations in the arts and their need for recognition. Relying on private funding threatens the freedom of art.
